Soft Tissue Massage

During soft tissue mobilization, a certified physical therapist applies manual and mechanical treatment techniques to your muscles, ligaments, and fascia with the goal of releasing adhesions and enhancing your muscular function.
Your body uses adhesions, which are long strands of collagenous scar tissue, as a long-term inflammatory process to try and heal a soft tissue damage. Pain trigger points are formed when these newly formed tissues tug against one another.

  • Manual massage techniques
  • Myofascial release
  • Mechanical soft tissue mobilization (firm roller and facial gun)

Goal Of Soft Tissue Massage

The aim of soft tissue mobilization is to lessen adhesions and muscle tension.

Depending on the kind of mobilization being done, these strokes might have different pressures, lengths of time, and patterns.

  • Increase your range of motion
  • Stretch tendons and muscles
  • Decrease edema and swelling
  • Improve functionality
  • Reduce discomfort

Soft Tissue Mobilization Techniques

Amongst the particular methods for mobilizing soft tissues are:

  • Applying constant pressure directly pressing and holding on to the constricted tissue
  • Pushing on the constricted tissue with alternating clockwise and counterclockwise rotating motions is known as an unlocking spiral.
  • Applying pressure over the musculature, tendons, and ligaments is known as friction massage.

Soft Tissue Mobilization Therapy Of Indication:

The mobilization of soft tissues treats the following conditions:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Ankle sprains
  • Chronic back and neck pain.
  • Joint Pain (Shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee and ankle pain.
  • Shoulder pain and scar tissues
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tendinitis and post-surgical scarring
  • Shin splints
  • Tennis or Golfer Epicondylitis
  • De Quervain’s tenosynovitis
  • Muscle sprains and strains
  • Calf pain
  • Patellar tendinopathy
  • Knee arthrofibrosis (joint disorder) after a patellar tendon repair surgery
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Hamstring tendinopathy
  • Ankle stiffness
  • Limited hip or knee range of motion

Soft Tissue Mobilization Therapy Of Contraindication:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Varicose veins
  • People taking blood thinner medication
  • Congestive heart disease or circulatory disorders
  • Acute inflammatory conditions
  • Acute injury or fracture
  • Advanced osteoporosis
  • Marfan’s syndrome or other connective tissue disorders, High-risk pregnancy
  • Unhealed surgical sites
  • Peripheral vascular disease
  • Unstable epilepsy

Myofascial Release:

A type of physical therapy called myofascial release is a sub type of soft tissue mobilization in which we apply longitudinal pressure over the muscle to lessen the tension. it is frequently used to treat myofascial pain syndrome, which is a persistent pain condition brought on by sensitivity and tightness in your myofascial tissues.

Myofascial release focuses on reducing pain by easing the tension and tightness in the trigger points and spasm.

Mechanical Soft Tissue Massage:

  • Foam roller:

It is used to reduce severe stiffness of muscles specially para spinal muscles causing low back pain, upper back stiffness and calf pain after long standing or walking.  can be great for pre-workouts to increase range of motion and potentially prevent injury but can also be great for post-workout recovery.

When using a foam roller, your body releases tension and relaxes, which helps stimulate blood flow and speed up recovery.

Fascial Gun:

Massage guns are best used over larger muscle groups such as paraspinal muscles, hip muscles, hamstrings, and the lower back area. It is specialized to target the specific pain point of that particular muscle.
