Physical therapy is a specific intervention used in vestibular rehabilitation to treat balance and dizziness concerns resulting from vestibular disorders, which affect the balance processes of the brain and inner ear. The purpose of this therapy is to improve quality of life and functional independence by addressing symptoms like vertigo and imbalance. The first step in the rehabilitation procedure is a comprehensive evaluation to identify the particular vestibular disorder and create a customized treatment strategy.
A variety of vestibular illnesses, such as
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) which is caused by head position changes resulting from misplaced otoliths in the inner ear, are among the conditions for which vestibular rehabilitation is indicated. Another typical sign is vestibular neuritis, which is characterized by abrupt, severe vertigo and nausea as a result of inflammation of the vestibular nerve. Vestibular rehab adjunct with prescribed medications for Meniere’s illness, which is characterized by tinnitus, hearing loss, and an ear fullness sensation. Targeted vestibular rehabilitation can also help those who are recovering from concussions or traumatic brain injuries and have vestibular symptoms that impair their balance and coordination.
Acute inner ear infections are one condition where this therapy is contraindicated; in order to prevent aggravating symptoms, these infections should be treated before initiating vestibular rehabilitation. Another contraindication includes uncontrolled cardiovascular problems, since physical activity can worsen these disorders. Severe neurological impairments present extra hazards and can restrict the effectiveness of vestibular therapy.
Exercises for vestibular therapy that target lightheadedness and enhance balance are among the fundamental elements of vestibular rehabilitation. These exercises include gaze stabilization activities to improve eye-head coordination and habituation exercises that decrease sensitivity to dizziness triggers, and balance and postural control exercises to increase stability and coordination. Functional training enhances walking stability, obstacle navigation, and general mobility through activities that resemble everyday work. In situations of BPPV, Specialized maneuvers are administered.
